The Lao PDR hosted the 17th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat (AEM) on 25-27 February 2011to further its move for regional economic integration and preparation for the ASEAN-EU business summit which will be held this year in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The community would group the 10 ASEAN countries of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam as one of the world’s largest production basis and market.
Lao-Vietnamese Trade Fair 2010 was officially opened at the Lao International Trade Exhibition and Convention Centre in Vientiane Capital on Wednesday, 1st December 2010. Taking part in the opening ceremony were Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Somphong Mongkhonvilay; Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Mr. Thongmy Phommisay; Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce of Vietnam Mr. Ngugen Thanh Bin and Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Ta Minh Chau. Mrs. Khemmany Pholsena Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce of Laos, said that the trade fair was aimed at enhancing the existing special solidarity between the two countries, particularly the trade sector between Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has provided technical grant assistance of US$1 million to the Lao PDR for the private sector and SME development designed to promote and enable environment for broad-based economic growth. The technical assistance is financed by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) and administered by the ADB. The technical assistance is anchored in the government’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) strategy which focuses on enhanced competition policy, lower cost regulation, and promotion of business development services.
